TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Wichita!

On Thursday, April 25th, we’re celebrating 7 years of Wichita Life with a party.

We would love to see you there!

In today's Wichita Life Update:

  • Harrison Ford
  • Downtown Land
  • Union Station

Let's get to it!

- Landon Huslig

Harrison Ford

As Harrison Ford’s home away from home, Wichita awaits his return every year.

This typically takes place sometime around early March - sometimes earlier, sometimes later.

He stays for a few days for what many think is plane maintenance, but is more likely to continue training at Ford’s top spot that keeps him flying safely at 81.

So he was here from Sunday through Thursday, where did he stop?

  • Monday: HomeGrown, Scotch & Sirloin
  • Tuesday: HomeGrown, Lotte
  • Wednesday: 🤷‍♂️
  • Thursday: HomeGrown

Han Solo sure seems to have his favorite spots in town, past trips have included trips to Sabor.

He left on Thursday on a United Flight through the Eisenhower Airport. I guess he doesn’t take the Millennium Falcon everywhere after all.

TOGETHER WITH ADVANCED ORTHOPEDIC ASSOCIATES

If you or a loved one has an accident - you trip and sprain your wrist, or your daughter falls off the trampoline and fractures her arm, you know how it goes. 🙃

Now what? Where do you go?

That's right! You head to Advanced Orthopedic Associates (AOA NOW) at their new location - 9828 E. Shannon Woods, Suite 100.

They are here to help you with any sudden or urgent orthopedic injuries.

Their services are less expensive than a trip to the ER (and truthfully, who likes going to the ER???)

Keep AOA in mind next time someone in the family gets a bad boo-boo.

TOGETHER WITH THE WICHITA PUBLIC LIBRARY & THE BIG READ

This Saturday is the kickoff for the 2024 NEA Big Read: Wichita.

What does that mean?

The Big Read program encourages residents to read a common book and participate in programs and events held around Wichita over a six-week timeframe.

This year’s book is There There by Tommy Orange.

This New York Times bestseller grapples with the complex history of Native Americans with an inheritance of profound spirituality – and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide. It follows 12 characters finding their way toward participating in the Big Oakland Powwow.

Two Key Programs for this year include:

  • March 28th: “An Urban Indigenous History of Wichita”
  • April 19: “Wichitalks Big Read Edition”

More info is coming on Wednesday!

CIVIL

Downtown Land

The transfer of land from the City of Wichita to WSU and KU for the new biomedical campus has officially been approved by the City Council.

This 1.9 acres in the 200 block of South Broadway is valued at $1.3 million and was donated by the City.

This $300 million project is a joint venture between WSU, WSU Tech, the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and the KU School of Pharmacy that will have over 3000 students, 200 faculty, and staff. It will also bring nearly 1600 new jobs downtown.

Downtown Apartment Financing

There are more apartments coming downtown, but not as many as once planned.

The City Council has come to an agreement with Vantage Point Properties for their new multifamily residential apartment building, but rather than the 370 units originally planned, it will be 258.

LOCAL

Tour de Wichita

The route for the April 28th Tour de Wichita has officially been announced.

It starts and ends at The Wave.

Union Station

Did you know that the Union Station Grand Terminal Building downtown is 110 years old?!

WSU NIL Changes

Hear me out…with all the new NIL stuff, we buy out the top 10 ranked high school basketball players and Wichita State becomes immediate contenders.

Does anyone have Charles Koch on speed dial?

The main WSU NIL (Name Image Likeness aka student-athletes getting paid) collective is changing.

Armchair Strategies is partnering with Blueprint Sports to rebrand as Wheat Shock Collective (a better name in my opinion anyway).

Ozone SZN

I’m unsure about you, but my family does not mix well with allergies.

And now we need to worry about “ozone season” too.

Children Around the World

Children Around the World is a non-profit that works with foreign exchange students from all over the world.

They are searching for families or individuals who would be interested in hosting an exchange student for either one semester or an academic year in 2024.

Interested? Email Victoria.

10-Year Master Plan

Wichita State just presented their 10-year master plan.

Dinos & Animals Now Open

Field Station: Dinosaurs and Tanganyika are both open, just in time for Spring Break.

Tonie Box

If you have kids, you may have heard of a “Tonie Box” which is a box where you set small characters that play songs from that music.

For example, my girls love their Anna and Elsa figures playing classic Disney Frozen songs.

You can now rent them for FREE from the Wichita Public Library.

Chiefs Fans

How big of a fan must you be to get an amputation?
