TOGETHER WITH

Good morning Wichita!

Today is National Gingerbread House Day which leads beautifully into our first story.

For those that may have missed our survey on Friday, we want to know who is reading these emails!

Please fill out this 100% anonymous survey? It'll only take 2 minutes. Thank you!

In today's Wichita Life Update:

  • Gingerbread Wichita
  • Downtown Businesses
  • Torchy's is Closed

Let's get to it!

- Landon Huslig

Gingerbread Wichita

5th graders at Trinity Academy outdid themselves with these gingerbread houses of Wichita buildings like the Nifty Nuthouse, Century II, Riverfront Stadium, and more!

TOGETHER WITH THE CITY OF WICHITA

Over 80,000!

That’s how many pot holes the city fixed in 2021.

Did you know the city fixes reported pot holes and lighter issues within 24 hours almost every time?

You can report pot holes, trash, other city issues: https://access.wichita.gov/

BUSINESS

Opening

  • Cabron y Vagos (restaurant & nightclub from the owner of Uno Mas) - 301 N Washington (former Headz & Tailz - Now Open

Closing

  • Torchy’s - Both Wichita locations - Now Closed

Offices making the move to Downtown

Since 2010, 450,000 sq ft of office space has been added downtown and we could support another 500,000+ sq ft between now and 2030.

In recent years, 10 companies have moved to downtown office space including:

  • Meritrust Credit Union
  • Keycentrix
  • Cargill
  • IMA Financial
  • Hutton

and more!

Bye Bye

A lot of businesses moved downtown in recent years, but how many have left Wichita since the pandemic?

According to change-of-address data from the USPS, almost 3000 (2936 to be exact) businesses have left Wichita since before the pandemic. 18% of these businesses left downtown.

CIVIL

School Closure

Colvin Elementary had to close Thursday and Friday last week due to a staffing shortage from illness + lack of subs.

This is a combination of less available teachers and a bad flu season.

Fentanyl

Fentanyl is dangerous and deadly.

I hear more and more stories around Wichita and the US about it.

The homeless community is hit at a much higher rate than others and is leading the numbers for Sedgwick County which is on track to see 5x the number of people die from fentanyl than in 2021.

LOCAL

Winter Wonderland

The Winter Wonderland at Naftzger Park over the weekend was a success.

ICT EXTRA

Head over and vote for the 3rd annual Wichita by E.B. People’s Choice Awards!

Kim Lewis

Local Author Kim Lewis wrong a children’s book. This month a portion of proceeds go to charity! You can order by emailing her here.

Elle King

Elle King will play at Dam Jam next summer.
