Human Trafficking in WIchita

Today’s topic is not a fun one, but a necessary one.

When you think of human trafficking, I doubt Wichita is one of the first places that comes to mind.

Before I saw the statistics about a decade ago, Wichita was maybe one of the last places I would think about.

I’d think of New York, Chicago, LA, Houston, or just other bigger cities.

But nope. The statistic that opened my eye was that Wichita is in the top 5 cities where sex trafficking gets its start (although it can be hard to get exact accurate numbers on these things).

Unfortunately, being smack dab in the US with access to major highways running every which way, makes Wichita a prime spot for this type of activity.

We have a lot of resources like ICT SOS, EMCU (Exploited and Missing Children Unit), and many more, but today we want to focus on a specific organization:

Hope Ranch for Women

What is Hope Ranch for Women and who do you serve?

Hope Ranch for Women is a faith-based 501c3 non-profit that exists to help women 18+ escape and heal from sexual exploitation and human trafficking. We have an 18-month Residential Program (opened in 2019), and a Community Program (relaunched in 2021), both designed to individually walk with women through the physical, mental, and spiritual effects of the horrors they have lived through, to experience hope, healing, and freedom.

Our Mission:

We are dedicated to empowering women who have been exploited, abused, and trafficked to rise above their circumstances.

Our Message:

We believe that through the power of Jesus Christ, survivors can become whole in mind, body, and soul.

Our Model:

We operate within a model which has been in place for 35 years, used internationally, to help women grow in all eight dimensions of a person’s life: Emotional, Intellectual, Vocational, Financial, Social, Creative, Family & Marriage, and Physical.

Success Story:

One of our recent graduates received a full-ride college scholarship and is studying to be an elementary education teacher.

Endorsements:

“Hope Ranch for Women plays a critical role in the recovery and healing of women who have experienced traumatic events. The majority of justice-involved women have suffered various forms of trauma. Many are not accustomed to being treated with respect or dignity. Hope Ranch’s curriculum and program are intentionally crafted to provide the rest and healing that many women so desperately need. Additionally, Hope Ranch’s faith-based approach can foster a new and beautiful way of life. Hope Ranch for Women meets a fundamental need in the community, and I look forward to a continued partnership.”

- Chantal Johnson, Institutional Parole Officer, Topeka Correctional Facility

“Hope Ranch for Women has completely changed my life. I would not be alive today if it were not for their love and care. Today I am free!”

- Graduate, Hope Ranch for Women

“I Have seen first-hand Hope Ranch for Women go from having an idea to being this incredible program that is growing and now becoming a premier example of how to partner along survivors in their journey to overcome their trauma… Hope Ranch for Women is truly an exceptional program.”

- Melissa Yao, Executive Director, National trafficking Sheltered Alliance
