TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Wichita!

Raise your hand if you have ever had a cinnamon roll with chili...

That leads us right into our first story.

In today's Wichita Life Update:

  • Chili Buns
  • $300 million investment
  • Minisa Bridge

Let's get to it!

- Landon Huslig

Chili Buns

No, that isn’t a new pet name to call your significant other (although we won't judge).

The Wichita Wind Surge has officially unveiled a new alternate identity (in addition to the Tumbas Vacas, Turbo Tubs, The Monrovians, Wranglers):

The Wichita Chili Buns.

An ode to the classic midwestern dish of Chili + Cinnamon rolls.

The Wind Surge kick of their season on April 5th at Riverfront Stadium, but stay tuned for details on when you can catch chili + cinnamon rolls at the stadium as well as the new unis.

TOGETHER WITH CBD PLUS

CBD has multiple uses from calming anxiety to pain relief to sleep aid.

Head to CBD Plus USA and check out the locally owned and operated hemp & cannabis company called Tall Trees that you can trust to produce the highest quality product.

Be sure to check out their day and night blends, particularly the gummies.

Menu Overhaul

The Belmont has been a great addition to College Hill and Wichita as a whole.

Great cocktails. Great food. Great vibes.

Chef Jennifer Reifschneider is mixing up the menu with nine entrees and more.

Newton Investment

GAF is North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer and they’re bringing $300 million to invest in a new shingle plant out in Newton.

Sam’s Club

Are you a Sam’s Club or Costco type of person?

We are Costco people, but mainly because we live closer.

If you go to Sam’s, the whole receipt check at the end process is about to change thanks to the AI.

STARTUP

GreenField Robotics

GreenField Robotics is not technically a “Wichita” company, but Cheney is close enough.

They just received an investment from Chipotle’s $100 million venture capital fund.

What do they do?

At a very high level, robots that cut weeds rather than using herbicides.

CIVIL

Minisa Bridge

Minisa Bridge on 13th street west of Waco needs improvement.

It is nearly 92 years old and will get ~$1 million in repairs and aesthetic rehab as the Wichita City Council approved the proposal last week.

Wastewater Facility

Much like an NFL placekick holder, you don’t hear about city infrastructure until something goes wrong.

Last week, the City broke ground on a new wastewater facility as part of the BNR / Biological Nutrient Removal program.

This will cost the City of Wichita a cool $357 mill and will be completed by 2027.

LOCAL

Riverfest Updates

I have good news and bad news.

Good news: Wichita is getting 5-time Grammy Award nominee Hunter Hayes to perform at Riverfest.

Bad news: button prices have gone up:

  • $20 for adults
  • $10 for kids 6-11
  • Free for kids 5 and under

$20 for a week’s worth of entertainment seems reasonable though and if we want bigger acts, it’s probably going to cost a bit more.

More concert and Riverfest announcements coming soon.

Book Bus

Have you seen the Wichita library’s new book bus around town?

Temporary Winter Shelter

This year, there is a temporary shelter at 21st and Grove for our homeless friends.

This is closing for good on March 31st, but that was always the plan.

A more permanent location will be used in the future.

Pints with a Purpose

Head to Chicken N Pickle on Thursday, April 11th from 6 - 8pm for Pints with a Purpose where you can grab samples of beer and seltzer, listen to live music from Whitnie Means, get a free beer stein (if you’re in the first 200 to register), and most importantly - support League 42!

Kansas Sneaker Fest

It’s almost here! This Saturday is Kansas Sneaker Fest!

The biggest event for all you sneakerheads out there.

Local Teachers

Teachers don’t get enough credit.

Congrats to the 8 Wichita teachers who won a 2024 Distinguished Classroom Teacher Award!

  • Emilia Bramble, Matt Miller, Whitney Steele, Julie Dunkelberger, Sam Belson, Jessica Petrick, Ashley Welsh, and Jefferey Arellano
