Good morning Wichita!

First off, I would like to thank you all for reading these emails multiple times per week. It really does blow me away how supportive you all are. I know my grammar and typos can grind your gears sometimes, but I am working on it!

NEWS

This is Her

Wichita has an incredible community of diverse women.

Something that is often missing is the chance to hear their stories, so we teamed up with Audra Dinell and The Thread to create a new event in town: This is Her.

It's a follow-up to The Thread's first, award-winning 'This is Her' event in the Spring, but with a little bit of a tweak.

What to expect:

• Thursday, September 15th, 5:30 - 8:30pm at OddFellow Hall
• A number of 'Ted-talk style' talks from women including Jillian Carroll (host of Good Day Kansas), Heather Giesen (owner of Grow), Idalia Loya (director of community impact at Empower), and a few more to be announced soon!
• Drinks and light hors d'oeuvres
• Intentional Conversation

The goal here is to create a space to hear inspiring stories and participate in intentional conversation with other people in Wichita.

The speakers will all be women, but anyone is welcome to come!

Legacy Antique Mall

Two tech companies, Keycentrix and Netability, are moving their HQ to the old Legacy Antique Mall building at Douglas and Emporia.

CIVIL

Major Bridge Replacement

Kellogg is known for just about one thing. Construction.

Today begins step one of a big project on our beloved highway. Surveying of the bridge just west of I-235 that crosses the Big Ditch will begin today.

That’s the first step in replacing this bridge from 1971. Actual construction will begin in 2025.

If you had to guess, how much traffic does this bridge see per day?

According to estimates, it sees 83,000 vehicles per day.

Woolsey Hall

I drive by Wichita State daily on the way to work. It’s been incredible to see how fast and how much campus has changed in pursuit of the ultimate innovation campus.

One more piece has finally finished and that is the new Wayne and Kay Woolsey Hall aka the new business school.

It is the new $60 million home of the W. Frank Barton School of Business.

Speaking of WSU, they also hired a new director of the Ulrich Museum of Art on campus, Vivian Zavataro.

Electric Guitar

Did you know the first electric guitar was played by a Wichitan, Gabe Brewer, in 1932. Now there's a new exhibit at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum that showcases the history of Wichita and electric guitars.

Wichita has a lot of talented authors. Chad Cox has recently released his first book - Lions Tooth Magic: The Circle of Friends.

Will Kansas sports finally become a little more fair?

Many private schools do not have to follow typical public school laws and are able to recruit or offer scholarships to athletes from across a widen span. This leads to more success in sports.

Private schools make up less than 8% of schools, but account for almost 40% of the championships.

The proposed change would “apply to private schools that have won five or more team state championships, across all sports, in the last five years.”

If they meet that criteria, they bump up a class.

Example: A 4A private school that wins all the time *cough Bishop Miege cough* would bump up to 5A.
